God’s Timing – Our God of Miracles

At Christmas I found out I had a raging infection in my tooth: an old root canal had failed and needed to be retreated.  When I went to the endodontist for the corrective procedure, I had an opportunity to share how Jesus had healed me of MS (because of previous meds I no longer had to take). While waiting for the numbing effects to kick in, my dental assistant (maybe in her 40’s) told me she felt God had sent me in that day just for her.  Turns out both she and the doctor are believers in Jesus.

When she told me her story, I was deeply moved.  She had recently been widowed and had two children; a son finishing high school, and a daughter who was in college, hoping to go to dental school.  It was her daughter who weighed heavily on her heart.  This young, 23-year-old woman happened to find a lump in her breast, and the mammogram and following ultrasound led to the need for a biopsy.  The biopsy was taking place the following week, the first week of January 2021.  This precious dental-assistant-mom had already experienced so much heartache, that the thought of possibly losing a child brought her incredible fear.  She didn’t know how she could handle such a thing.

But there I was, telling her how Jesus had healed me of MS after living with it for 25+ years.

So, she asked me to pray…or maybe I volunteered.   But bottom line, Myra* was being lifted up in prayer to Jesus for healing.  For long life.  To be able to go to dental school.

My retreatment that day didn’t fix everything, and I’d need another procedure to open up the gum in order to remove other areas of infection that had gone deep into the bone.  And that required insurance authorization.

So I waited.  One month.  Then two months.  Insurance was “a little behind”, so I’d need to wait another month.  Finally, after 3 ½ months, when I started feeling pain and knew I couldn’t wait any longer, the authorization came, and my appointment for the procedure was scheduled…for two weeks later.   Antibiotics and steroids to reduce swelling were prescribed.  Needless to say, I felt relieved when they called saying they were able to take me in four days earlier than scheduled.

Finally, last Saturday arrived, and when I got to the endodontist office, I had the same dental assistant!  I told her I wanted to hear about her daughter, but the office was very busy and there was no time to talk.  When she had to leave early, I was disappointed, but knew there might be more opportunities to hear what had happened with Myra.

And then Wednesday, 4 days later, my sutures started coming out.  They weren’t supposed to. Nor would they dissolve on their own.  I called the office and was told to come back so they could be replaced.

This whole situation seemed so incredibly strange!  Why in the world would this be happening?

Two words:  God’s timing.

So Thursday I went in to have my sutures replaced, and guess who my dental assistant was…yup,  Myra’s mom.  As soon as she saw me, she told me she’d wanted to tell me about her daughter on Saturday.  She said she was doing well in her master’s program, though she was in the middle of exams.  I pressed her and asked, “How did her biopsy go?  What were the results?”

She answered, “No biopsy.  It was a miracle.”

She said they’d gone together and (1st miracle – remember this was in January’s Covid surge) they let her accompany Myra.  The doctor had looked at the ultrasound that had been sent over with them and saw a large tumor.   While a new ultrasound was being done to get proper placement for the biopsy, Myra’s mom asked the doctor what he expected to happen.  When he told her there was a large tumor, fear gripped her.  Then he left to do the biopsy.

Very soon, another doctor was called in, and Myra’s mom thought something was very wrong and feared the worst.  A few more minutes passed before the doctor came to speak with her again.

He didn’t know how to explain it.  When the ultrasound was done…They. Found. Nothing.   It was as if the ultrasounds were from two different people.  Confirmed by two doctors and several sets of eyes.  No biopsy needed!

Praise to our God of miracles!  Myra was healed in Jesus’ name!!

So why this timing?  Why did I have to wait so long to find out this incredible news?

Well, last Wednesday my friend Louise, texted that she was going in that afternoon for a repeat mammogram, and asked me to pray with her.  I did, but it turned out that she, too, needs a biopsy.  Louise needed to hear this encouraging news, and our God of miracles knew the perfect time for it to be delivered.  He was faithful to His promise to use all things for good (Romans 8:28) – even waiting for a failed root canal to get treated.

I also needed to hear this news at this time.  The same day my stitches were falling out and Louise was having her mammogram, happened to be my mom’s birthday.  And my mom died of breast cancer (although, the Lord gave her 15 extra years following her mastectomy). Yeah, I’m sure you get it.  God knew my faith needed bolstering as well, as I prayed for Louise.  I know better than most that He’s a God of miracles, but I can still become more focused on the giants I’m facing, rather than on our Almighty God.  This perfect timing has refreshed my faith and I know He’s got more miracles ahead for all of us!

So, what are you facing today?  Does your faith need encouraging?  May I challenge you with whatever it is you’re going through, to thank the Lord for it and ask Him to use it to glorify His name?  I think you’ll be absolutely amazed by all that He will do through you, as a result!!

“Lord Jesus, I praise You  for these signs and wonders You have performed in Your All-Powerful Name.  Thank you for the encouragement they bring. I ask You, please, to give us strength and courage for the situations You have allowed into our lives.  And would You use them to bring glory to Your Name?  Thank you, my Savior and my God.  Amen.”

Merry Christmas 2020

In this most unusual Christmas season, I hope & pray you are healthy & hopeful for better days ahead.  As I considered what to share about our Covid 2020 year I decided to look back through my Facebook posts for inspiration. What I found brought joy & hope to my heart.  Rather than seeing the myriad changes & deep losses we experienced, I was drawn to what God had led me to write about the New Year (2020) & what He wanted us to focus on.

Last December, I contemplated four scripture passages to focus on in the year ahead, including 1 Peter 1:6-7 (NLT): “So be truly glad.  There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while.  These trials will show that your faith is genuine.  It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold – though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.” (emphasis mine)

On January 10, 2020, I posted, “The Christmas lights are down but JOY remains…camouflaged…you need to look for it!” It accompanied a photo of one of our JOY Christmas signs hidden in a plumeria tree.  Clearly, the Lord was showing me that difficult days were ahead, but JOY truly could be found if we would only look for it.  Keeping our eyes fixed on Him (the source of true joy) & not the difficulties surrounding us, would make it so much easier to find. If only we would always remember this!

Hidden JOY

Joy remains.
Sometimes you need to look for it.

Unfortunately, for a time our focus shifted.  Both Keith & I became weary & lost sight of the hidden joy, forgetting that God was still at work. Difficult days of moving my dad & stepmom, Patty, to a smaller place for the second time in 5 months, followed a short time later by Patty’s passing brought deep grief.  With Dad all alone, in lockdown & living 100 miles from us made for dark days.  Losing several extended family members to Covid & other health issues brought grief upon grief. Don’t even mention what our country had been going through. The joy of the Lord seemed so distant.

That is, until He helped bring a fresh perspective; one of choosing gratitude & joy despite what was going on around us.

So, here’s a peek at some of those hidden joys we found that the Lord blessed us with in 2020:

Keith worked all year, even working overtime, despite having Achilles tendinitis & being in a walking boot.  (We always knew he was an essential worker!)  Kole’s work as an attorney for Netflix continues as well, although he now works from home.  I have continued leading worship for Community Bible Study, prerecording all the music so it can be played on Zoom, where we meet virtually. (I’m still healthy & strong with no signs of MS since my healing 2 ½ years ago.)  We’ve been intentional about getting to know our neighbors in new ways, finding out how we can support one another, especially through prayer.  We also added to our family by rescuing an older Ragdoll kitty, Isabella (Izzy for short).

The highlight of the year was celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in September, & being able to get away to Blue Lantern Inn (Dana Point CA) for several days.  Our joy in becoming a family so many years ago increases day by day & we feel so blessed.

So, as we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus, may the hope & joy that only He can give, fill your hearts & homes as never before…even if it’s camouflaged & you need to look for it.

Merry Christmas!

Come and See

John 1:39, 45b-46 – “(Jesus) said to them, “Come and you will see.”  So they came and saw… “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth”. Nathanael said to (Philip), “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”  Philip said to him, “Come and see.””

Matthew 11:28-30 – Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden (burdened), and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

I’m celebrating today.  It’s two years since I felt God’s touch that brought healing to my body and invincible joy to my soul.  Two years!

I was weary and so burdened.  I was thanking Jesus for His faithfulness to me over the 25½ years I’d been battling MS.  I told Him I trusted Him to be faithful in the future, as well, but I was tired of the fight.  So I asked Him, “Jesus, I’m weary; would You please just heal me?”

He answered immediately…immediately…with a touch to my leg.  Immediately, I went from weakness, tripping, being unable to walk, to dancing and leaping and praising God!  And I’ve been healthy and strong ever since that day.

Come and See.

Jesus is the healer of what’s broken.  In addition to healing my broken body He healed my broken heart and broken ways of thinking.  Each of these places were healed through His touch; some instantly; some took much longer. He continues to work in other areas of my life, but His precise, loving, craftsmanship will fix everything that needs to be repaired.

Earlier this year a friend shared about Kintsugi, the “Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer mixed with gold…As a philosophy it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.” (Wikipedia)  It makes the repaired item unique and even more beautiful than it was originally.

That’s what Jesus does when He heals and repairs our brokenness. I know it’s what He’s done for me.  He heals the wound and leaves the scar so we can remember and celebrate His loving touch.

But don’t just take my word for it.  Find out for yourself!  Come and see what He will also do for you.

I’d love to hear what you find so I can celebrate with you!
